Our History
1929
A Sweet Beginning Amidst Hard Times
The Snelgrove legacy was born when Charles Rich Snelgrove set out to create something special: “artistry in pleasure foods.” During one of America’s toughest times, Charles crafted ice cream as an affordable luxury – a nickel cone that could bring families together to forget their troubles, share laughter, and taste a bit of hope. Using only premium ingredients, Snelgrove became a place for simple comfort and togetherness, reminding people that joy and connection were within reach even in hard times.
1935
A Thanksgiving Honor
In 1935, Snelgrove Ice Cream’s reputation soared to new heights—literally! Charles Snelgrove’s premium ice cream was chosen to be part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Thanksgiving celebration at his summer home in Warm Springs, Georgia. In a special arrangement, tubs of Snelgrove’s finest were loaded onto a plane and flown to the president, a testament to the brand’s unmatched quality and craftsmanship. Snelgrove Ice Cream was proudly served at the presidential table, securing its place as a cherished American classic and a symbol of joy and togetherness on a day dedicated to gratitude.
1962
The Rise of an Icon: The Double Cone Sign
In 1962, Snelgrove’s legendary double cone sign was installed at the 2100 South location, crafted by YESCO as their first 3-dimensional sign. This 40-foot-wide masterpiece, featuring “Snelgrove” in bold, looping cursive neon and topped with a spinning, giant double cone, became an instant Salt Lake City landmark. Today, this iconic symbol of community and celebration is a protected historical landmark, preserving the Snelgrove legacy in Sugar House and honoring the joy it has brought to generations.

The Flavor that Reached the oval office
President Ronald Reagan, who was well-known for his love of jelly beans. In fact, Reagan had jars of jelly beans everywhere—his desk, his meetings, and even his airplane. During a visit to the White House, Richard Snelgrove had the chance to meet President Reagan. When the president heard about Snelgrove Ice Cream, he asked if they had ever made a jelly bean flavor. Inspired by the request, Snelgrove quickly created a one-of-a-kind jelly bean ice cream, and 18 gallons of it were shipped directly to the White House. The result was a truly special flavor that the president himself enjoyed, adding another sweet chapter to the Snelgrove legacy.
2002
utah Welcomes the World
Following the tragic events of 9/11, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City became a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and hope. The Games' slogan, "Light the Fire Within," inspired the world to come together, and Snelgrove Ice Cream proudly played its part in celebrating this spirit. The iconic double cone was immortalized in a limited-edition Olympic pin, which became a prized collectible for visitors and athletes who eagerly traded them as a symbol of connection and triumph. As the world gathered in Salt Lake City, Snelgrove was there to sweeten the moment, reminding us of the power of simple joys in the face of adversity.
